Jan Newsom, J.D.
Jan Newsom recently retired as an attorney at the firm of Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell, LLP in Dallas, Texas. She received both her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. Jan is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, having served as a former chairperson of the Health Law Section, and the American Health Lawyers Association, and also is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas.
Jan is an experienced health care attorney, and her practice has focused on regulatory and transactional issues for institutions and health care providers. Her current practice involves representation of hospitals, surgery centers, physicians and other health care providers, and HMOs and PPOs addressing various employer-healthcare program issues. She is a frequent speaker at seminars and workshops on health care related topics including HIPAA, Medical Records Requirements, Fraud and Abuse and the Stark laws, Managed Care Liability, and Peer Review/Quality Improvement. She served as the governor appointed chair of the Texas Council for Developmentaly Disabilities for more than 12 years and remains active in advocacy for people with developmental disabilities.
Jan has been an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Dallas for a number of years, teaching Health Law in a Masters Degree program for Health Administration. She has been selected to the "Best Lawyers in America" in Health Law yearly since 2012.
Jan learned about Hand Therapy through a fortuitous meeting with a CHT during her work for the Dallas Symphony League. After hearing about how dedicated and willing CHTs were to enhancing professional recognition of the profession, through volunteer service on the HTCC Board, she jumped at the opportunity to serve as the Public Member of the Board. Jan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the HTCC Board in the areas of credentialing, licensing, and insurance regulations. Jan was elected to the board in 1995, and also serves on the Executive, Recertification, Audit, International and Governance Committees.
