SPLINTING THE HAND, WRIST AND ELBOW
06/22/13-06/23/13
The art of custom splinting is an often frustrating and challenging skill to master. Invariably we find our best efforts in a pile of very expensive and awkward to handle mass of materials leaving both our patients and ourselves baffled by the outcome. Taking control of the materials through understanding their properties, characteristics and “feel”, along with a strong foundation of upper extremity biomechanics and surface anatomy can quickly turn the tables in your favor. Holding true to the title, these clinicians have created a remarkable formula for mastering splint fabrication in an introductory environment that incorporates ample opportunity to both observe and fabricate custom splinting, all the while, sharing the dos and don’ts that can only come from 20 years of trial and error. A fun, relaxed and non-intimidating workshop developed to replace frustrated and baffled with enlightened and confident. Diagnosis and conditions covered in this workshop include fractures, arthritis, contractures, CTDs and wounds. Emphasis is placed on replicating the actual patient environment. Course handouts and labs are designed to allow immediate clinical application of splinting techniques.

Scrutiny of the Multidimensional Thumb Muscles
07/16/13-07/16/13
Each of the eight thumb muscles is examined in detail for its normal and potentially pathological effect on all joints it crosses. This webinar demonstrates how thumb muscles work in concert and how a muscle that only crosses one joint can create movement at other joint/s. Attention is given to the three muscles that simultaneously flex the MP joint and extend the IP joint while also creating movement at the CMC joint. This review explains how imbalances at the CMC joint interplay with imbalances at the other joints.
These webinars provide you with the expertise and clinically relevant content you have come to expect from Judy C. Colditz, OT/L, CHT, FAOTA, with the convenience of learning from home or work at a time that suits your schedule. Each series of webinars is taught live online and is also available for a limited time afterward as a recording for all registered participants. |

THE CERVICO-THORACIC COMPLEX
07/20/13-07/21/13
Neck pain is present in a large portion of the population. Treatment of these patients can often be difficult, particularly when specific causative structures cannot clearly be defined. Attempting to treat neck pain without an attempt to classify the patient can lead to inconsistent outcomes and frustration for both the patient and clinician. Guiding strategies can help improve patient outcomes and lead the clinician based on the most appropriate evidence-based interventions. This seminar will help clinicians identify common problems associated with neck pain as well as appropriate treatments. Evaluation procedures will also be introduced to group patients in treatment categories. This classification system will assist the clinician in determining which patients will most benefit from specific treatment interventions and improve outcomes. Finally, eclectic treatment interventions will be covered including stabilization, manual techniques, and pain management strategies. Corrective home exercises will also be reviewed. Participants will walk away with practical and useful treatment techniques that can be implemented with their patients the very next day. |

SPLINTING THE HAND, WRIST AND ELBOW
07/27/13-07/28/13

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF THE UPPER QUADRANT
08/03/13-08/04/13
Direct access now demands that clinicians understand and master the art of differential diagnosis as it relates to both neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunctions and co-morbidities. Physical examination and treatment of the upper quadrant requires a thorough understanding of the pathomechanics of the shoulder complex, cervico-thoracic complex and upper ribs. Upper quadrant dysfunction in any of these specified regions can influence pain, posture and motion of the entire core and peripheral joints. Therefore, clinicians need to possess a solid skill set utilizing evidence-based examination, diagnosis and intervention strategies to manage both primary and secondary disorders in this region. This course will combine an efficient examination process with evidence based screening principles in order to identify and sequence a custom treatment plan tailored to the dysfunction. Hands on lab sessions will further facilitate proper examination and treatment interventions involving evidence based special testing, manual therapy and exercise prescription. Finally, case scenarios will be incorporated to pair clinical reasoning to situations that are encountered in the clinical setting. |

Pediatric Hand Therapy and Splinting
09/21/13-09/22/13
When presented with pediatric patients with complex conditions, therapists may face multiple challenges including specialized splinting needs (such as making a finger splint for a one week old infant), pre-surgical and post-surgical intervention strategies (such as deciding when to start therapy after a tendon transfer), and developmental or functional issues (such as how to get a child with no elbow flexion to be able to feed himself).
During the first day, this presentation focuses on common pediatric conditions that result in a child being referred to therapy including Cerebral Palsy, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Brachial Plexus Injuries, Radial Ray Deficiencies, Camptodactyly, Thumb-in Palm Deformities, Trigger Fingers, Epidermolysis Bullosa, and Arthrogryposis. The presenter will share her expertise in knowledge of normal hand development, evaluation and therapeutic intervention, including splinting. She also brings treatment ideas for a hands-on sharing demonstration.
The second day focuses on pediatric splinting with demonstration and fabrication of nine splints. When working with the pediatric population, therapists are challenged by the need to fabricate small size splints and the decisions regarding splint purpose, style, design and materials. The biggest challenge may involve gaining the child's cooperation during the splint fabrication and compliance with the splint use at home. After attending this course, participants should be able to rise to all of these challenges.

Manual Edema Mobilization
09/27/13-09/28/13
Manual Edema Mobilization (MEM), a method of gentle stimulation of the lymphatics to reduce congested lymphatic edema, was specifically developed by the speaker to help patients with sub-acute and chronic hand/arm edema occurring post surgery/trauma or stroke. MEM addresses over-whelmed intact normal nodes and lymphatics thus the technique is not appropriate for post cancer lymphedema or primary lymphedema.
This course teaches the MEM method of edema reduction, how to differentiate types of edema, integration of other edema treatments, plus the relationship of venous and lymphatic systems to edema reduction. MEM addresses the frustration of hand therapists who, in spite of their best efforts, have difficulty reducing sub-acute and chronic hand/arm edema. Edema that presents as persistent (longer than one week) and slow to re-bound when pitted, usually indicates a lymphatic over-loaded system.
Learn new, short (10 to 15 minute treatment), MEM protocols for specific hand therapy diagnoses. These protocols allow hand therapists to begin edema reduction in a therapy session, give an effective mini-home program, and incorporate additional treatments within the same session to meet other patient needs.
Extensive time is spent in lab, learning the method, rationale, and problem solving approach to using MEM for reduction of persistent edema post hand/arm trauma, surgery, or chronic stroke hand edema. Because of the extensive lab time and case study presentation, participants feel confident to immediately apply techniques in a clinical setting. Class size is limited to maximize participant to faculty interaction. |

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF THE UPPER QUADRANT
09/28/13-09/29/13

10/05/13-10/06/13
The biggest challenge may involve gaining the child?s cooperation during the splint fabrication and compliance with the splint use at home. After attending this course, participants should be able to rise to all of these challenges. |

Clinical Use of Graded Motor Imagery for Rewiring the Brain
10/19/13-10/20/13
Graded Motor Imagery is an emerging therapeutic strategy for treating patients. It integrates established principles of graded exposure and response prevention with the current theories in the neuroscience of pain and neuroplasticity.
Graded Motor Imagery consists of laterality training, imagery and mirror therapy. This lecture will present a model to understand the role of the brain and ways to use a “top-down“ treatment program to treat the changes that occur in the brain.
This lecture is appropriate for therapists treating orthopedic as well as neurological consequences of injury. This 1 1/2 day course covers treatment of both musculoskeletal and neurovascular consequences following injury and consists of lectures, lab and review of individual case studies.
Therapeutic interventions that help the change in the brain or cortical reorganization will be discussed at length. At the completion of this course the student will have developed skills to take back to the clinic for immediate utilization.
Attire: Please wear clothing that exposes the shoulder, chest wall and scapular region.

This two-day seminar will present a comprehensive overview of the structural and biomechanical basis of hand, wrist & elbow function and their relationship to the entire upper extremity. This unique approach thoroughly examines the relationship of these structures to human performance and suggest strategies for functional improvement. Common pathologies, mechanisms of injury, and progressive pre and post-operative treatment involving fractures, RSI/CTDs, tendon/nerve lacerations, arthritis, sprains/strains and dislocations will be covered with strong reference to their impact on function. Course content includes medical screening, differential diagnosis, imaging, functional progression of treatment, splinting/casting, PAMs, pain management and the non-compliant patient. This seminar will NOT present a “protocol driven approach” to rehabilitation. Rather, the participant will learn a “framework” for physical examination that will permit rapid synthesis of findings into a “dynamic treatment plan” designed to increase patient satisfaction and outcomes. |

SPLINTING THE HAND, WRIST AND ELBOW
10/19/13-10/20/13

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF THE UPPER QUADRANT
11/02/13-11/03/13

SPLINTING THE HAND, WRIST AND ELBOW
11/09/13-11/10/13

THE HAND, WRIST & ELBOW COMPLEX
11/09/13-11/10/13

Finally, case scenarios will be incorporated to pair clinical reasoning to situations that are encountered in the clinical setting. The purpose of this seminar is to allow the clinician to move from protocol derived treatment to professional assessment and treatment of the nervous system and the interfacing musculoskeletal system. The emphasis is on creative solutions to difficult problems by integrating neuroanatomical, neurophysiological and kinesioloical principles creating a fresh approach to difficult patient problems resulting in improved functional outcomes and patient satisfaction. |

THE CERVICO-THORACIC COMPLEX
11/23/13-11/24/13

12/14/13-12/15/13
