Philosophy
From its inception, the Board of Directors of HTCC envisioned a two-step process of Certification and Recertification. Certification is the first step in this process; it provides assurance to the public that a Certified Hand Therapist meets the high standards set by HTCC. Once certified, it is the personal responsibility of each Certified Hand Therapist to maintain the credential in order to demonstrate current knowledge and skills. Because of changes in the profession, every CHT is required to demonstrate continued professional development and competency by recertifying every five years.

What is Required to Apply for Certification?

  • Documentation of five years of practice as an occupational therapist or
physical therapist, verified with a copy of your original license, certificate, or registration as an OT or PT.
  • A copy of your current professional credential to practice in the United
States (including its territories and military bases), Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, India or South Africa. Depending on your profession and where you practice, a professional credential may include a license, certificate, or registration. In all cases, it is the credential that you need to legally practice in that location. This credential must be active, and you must be in good standing with the agency that issued it.
  • Documentation of 4,000 hours of Direct Practice Experience in Hand
Therapy, verified by your supervisor or employer.
  • Completion of an Explanation of Hours form that describes how you determined the number of hours of  Hand Therapy Direct Practice you are submitting.
  • Completed and signed consent form.
