Jan Newsom, J.D.

Jan
Newsom is an attorney at the firm of Locke Liddell & Sapp,
LLP in Dallas, Texas and has been Senior Counsel for the firm
since 1994. Previously she held a position as Senior Vice
President and General Counsel for Blue Cross and Blue Shield
of Texas, Inc.
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Jan received
her law degree in December 1971. Jan is a member of the State
Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, having served as a former chairperson of the Health
Law Section, and the American Health Lawyers Association and
also is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Court,
Northern District of Texas.
Jan is an experienced health care attorney, and her practice
focuses on regulatory and transactional issues for institutions
and health care providers. Her current practice involves representation
of hospitals, surgery centers, physicians and other health
care providers, and HMOs and PPOs addressing various employer-healthcare
program issues. She is a frequent speaker at seminars and
workshops on health care related topics including HIPAA, Medical
Records Requirements, Fraud and Abuse and the Stark laws,
Managed Care Liability, and Peer Review/Quality Improvement.
Jan learned about Hand Therapy through a fortuitous meeting
with a CHT during her work for the Dallas Symphony League.
After hearing about how dedicated and willing CHTs were to
enhancing professional recognition of the profession, through
volunteer service on the HTCC Board, she jumped at the opportunity
to serve as the Public Member of the Board. Jan brings a wealth
of knowledge and experience to the HTCC Board in the areas
of credentialing, licensing, and insurance regulations. Jan
was elected to the board in 1995, and also serves on the Recertification,
Audit and Governance Committees.
