Nancy M. Cannon, OTR, CHT
Vice President
Nancy
Cannon, a well-known educator and published author, is the
Director of the Hand Rehabilitation Center of Indiana: a division
of the Indiana Hand Center located in Indianapolis. Working
with 10 orthopedic hand surgeons and fifteen therapists,
Nancy directs clinical care, clinical research, and cutting
edge developments in hand therapy. A strong advocate of medical
education, Nancy has been the meeting coordinator for a national
hand therapy meeting: Hand Care since 1984.
An active charter member of the American Society of Hand
Therapists since 1981, Nancy has served in leadership positions
for the society for over ten years. Nancy was the 1989 president
of the American Society of Hand Therapists and the 1992 recipient
of the Natalie Barr Lectureship award for outstanding contributions
to the field of hand therapy. She served as the chairman of the American Hand Therapy Foundation for four years. Today she is a board member of the National Board of Accreditation for Orthotic Suppliers.
Nancy has been drawn to hand therapy ever since she was a
student and had one of her first clinical experiences at the
Indiana Hand Center. She knew right away that it was what
she wanted to do. It was objective, challenging, and fun.
From the start, there was a great deal of respect between
hand surgeons and hand therapists, and she loved the way everyone
worked together to establish the best approach to the patient.
When she started in hand therapy, it was a relatively new
specialty, and Nancy has had many opportunities to make a
difference on behalf of patients in this evolving specialty. She likes nothing
better than working closely with the patients and networking
with other therapists about difficult patient problems.
Nancy has been active with the Hand Therapy credentialing
program since its infancy. She was elected Secretary in 1989
when the commission was incorporated and in April 2000 was
elected Vice President. She also serves as chairperson of
the Marketing Committee.
